1:1 Coaching Case Study — From “Always Planning” to Present, Grounded, and Clear

Client: Pete Edwards — Scientist in atmospheric chemistry (air pollution & climate change)

The Challenge

High-performing, future-oriented, and constantly “on,” Pete noticed some patterns creeping in:

  • Living in the future: always planning the next research project or climbing trip; struggling to enjoy day-to-day life.

  • Seasonal dip: recurring winter irritability (“Boulder grump”) after moving back to the UK.

  • Stress spillover: periodic sleep problems tied to workload; work/life boundaries blurring.

  • People-pleasing & overcommitment: saying yes to work that didn’t fit his strengths or values.

Pete came to coaching as a sceptical scientist who wanted practical change, not platitudes.

The Approach

1:1 coaching focused on clarity, presence and values, combining depth with straightforward tools:

  • Value & identity work — distinguishing what Pete actually values vs. what he felt he “should” value.

  • Embodied presence — simple practices to notice mood, state and needs in real time.

  • Boundaries & choice — creating visible rules (e.g., time limits on email; scheduled, protected focus) and rehearsing “no.”

  • Experiment mindset — small, testable actions between sessions; reflective notes to track what stuck.

  • Targeted resources — short podcasts, videos and reading to extend the work between sessions.

  • Perspective work — light role-play and reframing to see long-standing habits from new angles.

Outcomes

  • Present-moment steadiness Pete reports being happier at home and enjoying everyday life more, rather than waiting for the next trip or perfect forecast.

  • Seasonal improvement The winter pattern shifted from “pretty much every time it rained” to only a couple of times this year.

  • Better sleep management Sleep issues still arise at busy times, but Pete now recognises the pattern earlier and has tools to manage workload and state.

  • Values-aligned career focus Clearer emphasis on people and mentoring (students, team) over admin and committees he found draining; more confident, values-based decisions about what to accept or decline.

  • Healthier boundaries Practical limits around email and availability (with the normal slips and resets); stronger separation between work and recovery.

  • Daily practices that stick A simple meditation habit and short reflections between sessions reinforced change.

  • Relationship upside The shift is noticeable at home: Pete’s partner has explicitly commented on the difference in winter and day-to-day mood.

Measurable Signals (Pete’s words)

  • Winter irritability moved from frequent to “maybe a couple of times this year.”

  • Coaching time translated into more contentment, clearer priorities, and fewer unnecessary commitments.

Client Reflection

“I didn’t know what to expect and was pretty sceptical. Coaching has been surprisingly practical and impactful. I’m more self-aware, more present, and more content. I’m clearer on what I value, better at saying no, and my partner has noticed the difference. The hour always flies by — it’s spacious, sometimes uncomfortable in a good way, and it works.”
