Group Supervision Case Study - Strengthening Confidence, Guardrails & Growth through Group Supervision
Client: Dr. Claire Handby – Executive Coach, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building, Member of the Association for Project Management, accredited with ICF and EMCC.
The Challenge
After completing her Executive Coaching Diploma, Claire moved quickly into practice with senior clients. She was ambitious and capable, but knew she needed:
A safe space to explore real dilemmas without feeling alone.
Clear professional guardrails to navigate ethical grey areas.
Ongoing learning and momentum beyond her diploma.
A community of peers to share the journey with.
The Approach
Claire joined one of my quarterly group supervision cohorts — a small group of four coaches working together with me as supervisor.
In our sessions, Claire was able to:
Bring real, live coaching dilemmas into a confidential space.
Use structured reflective techniques — including listening to peers discuss her case while she observed — to gain fresh, unfiltered insight.
Revisit and strengthen ethical guardrails in line with ICF and EMCC standards.
Build supportive connections with her peers, reinforced by practical agreements, resources, and between-session contact.
The Outcome
One example stands out. A client confided in Claire that her career progression depended on the business attracting new investment — and Claire knew potential investors personally. With supervision, Claire found a way through: she offered the client the option of making an introduction, but only if the founder wished, and strictly outside the coaching relationship. The decision stayed with the client, and Claire kept her professional boundaries intact.
The Broader Impact
The benefits for Claire extended far beyond a single situation:
Ethical clarity — clear, practical guardrails for handling dilemmas with integrity.
Greater confidence and resilience — no longer feeling alone or under pressure when complex material arises.
Sustained growth — supervision turned diploma learning into everyday capability, ensuring progress didn’t stall.
Community and camaraderie — a trusted peer group for reflection, encouragement and perspective.
Practical structure — simple agreements and rhythm made supervision easy to sustain alongside practice.
Commercial sense — group supervision spread the cost while leaving space for deeper one-to-one work if needed.
Client Reflection
“Supervision with George has given me stronger foundations and confidence to continually grow as an executive coach. I now have a trusted place to bring dilemmas, gain perspective, and keep developing. It’s given me ethical clarity, camaraderie with peers, and the confidence to show up at my best for clients.”
